Open Source in 2012

The rise of Open Source

The world of open source software experienced a great development over the last decade and is considered the backbone of the web. The majority of Internet servers run Linux, Apache, mySQL, and PHP, which is the foundation upon which these open source software systems operate.
The world of open source is not just about free software, but about the community that surrounds the software and the business opportunities associated with this. Open source is an approach to the design, development, and distribution of software, offering practical accessibility to a software's source code. Some consider open source as one of various possible design approaches, while others consider it a critical strategic element of their operations. OpenSource_fields
Key advantage(s) of Open Source

As nearly everyone knows, open source software is a low cost alternative to proprietary software.  For example, the open source Linux operating system is commonly seen as a low cost alternative to Microsoft's Server 2003 operating system, or Sun's version of Unix. The popularity of open source is seen in the fact that today the largest market share for web servers is held by the open source Apache system.

One might think, therefore, that the key advantage of open source software is its low cost of ownership.. not quite though.

IT decision makers value "reduced dependence on software vendors" as the most important advantage of open source.  This indicates that software buyers must feel some level of dependence on proprietary software vendors, from which they desire freedom.  Such dependence includes reliance on the vendor for maintenance and support and the necessity for the buyer to accept version upgrades that the buyer may not need or want.

Open source software is in fact not really free. With most types of software, administration and support costs overshadow initial software license cost and annual maintenance fees--the costs that are minimized by open source. Therefore, software buyers do not see the low or zero initial cost of open source as its most important advantage.

This is why we at Host Ventura offer numerous Open Source Solutions, tailored to your specific needs, and thus giving your business the flexibility it requires at the reduced cost of proprietary software solutions.

Before open source became widely adopted, developers and producers used a variety of phrases to describe the concept; the term open source gained popularity with the rise of the Internet, which provided access to diverse production models, communication paths, and interactive communities. Software development costs in organizations have been touted as being approximately 15% of total costs. This indicates that the value of one over another development methodology is more of a marketing decision (which customers and pricing models) as much as it is about the design of software.

The open source model of operation and decision making allows concurrent input of different agendas, approaches and priorities, and differs from the more closed, centralized models of development. The principles and practices are commonly applied to the peer production development of source code for software that is made available for public collaboration. The result of this peer-based collaboration is usually released as open-source software, however, open source methods are increasingly being applied in other fields of endeavor, such as biotechnology.
